How rude

I live in a rental. I just gave my 30 day notice to vacate the premises on October 2, Friday. I have 27 more days to live here... and the real estate agency I rent through is already placing a sign in my front yard. I went out and told the man 'I don't want anyone coming in my house until I am completely out'. He told me 'the real estate office has the right to show the house as long as they let you know ahead of time'.

Ummm, what?! I need to find my rental agreement (in all this mess?) and see if there is anything written on it regarding the right to show my house while I'm still living in it.

Maybe I should make it good and messy, that way they will be too embarrassed to show it again. lol

  1. Yeah, I think that's standard. Hide anything valuable. In real life, probably not even a guarantee they won't show it without notifying you if they can't reach you, unless you've changed the locks so they don't have a key.

Otherwise the landlord will have a no-paying-tenant time between when you move out and when s/he rents it.

  2. Karen Anne,
The house was empty for at leat 3 months before I rented it. I tried to change the door knob today, but failed miserably. I have rented for over 25 years and have never once had people come in my apartment before I moved out. I think it's wrong for people to be able to walk through the house, when I paid $950 to live here this month. I guess I'm just having privacy issues. Do you know at least 4 people were on my property this weekend at the new house? Looking through my garage and my windows because the darn real estate agency still has not removed the code locks from the doors. They all told me the same thing, that they thought the house was for sale. (hello... there is no 'for sale' sign hanging up outside)

  3. We lived in a historic loft above a book store before we moved into our home and we gave 2 months notice, I even listed our apartment on Craigslist and got at least 10 names and numbers of people interested in renting it out. The rental office still tried to bill me what was left in the lease. It went back and forth for... 3 months before I wrote them a nasty letter saying I was taking it to small claims. (all that time they still hadnt rented out the apt.) after they got my letter the apartment was rented out a week later! Jerks.

We actually had people that came up to our house and took photos. It FREAKED me out. When I walked onto the front porch I said "EXCUSE ME, Can I help you?" and they seriously took off with out a word. We even had some people ask to see inside... I said no. Its not that im... unfriendly per se, I just dont want people scoping my house. I would be angry too if they wanted to show it with out my being there- Technically they cant show it with out notifying you first and getting your consent. Stick to your guns girl.

  4. Victoria, that is the amazing part... every single person that catches me outside, asks to see the inside. And... several of them even asked how much I paid for it! This one couple was actually looking in my sunroom on Sunday; the house echos so much that I thought they were in the house! Startled me for a moment. They were really nice though, and I did let them come in and see it.
