The cleaning continues...

I didn't get a whole lot done after work. I had good intentions though, if that counts.

One of my work friends came over to cap the line on the hot water heater. (I still haven't bought a new one; that is one of the weekend projects.) He also checked my front door to see why I cannot open it. It appears to be the latch on the dead bolt getting stuck. So, for now I'm not going to use the dead bolt.

One of my other work friends also stopped by to see the house. And the neighbors across the street asked if they could see inside. I don't mind showing the house, but I feel like telling them "ok, now you've seen it, now scoot so I can get some work done" lol (I had a random stranger come and ask to see the inside of my house yesterday as well)

I did manage to wash all of the windows on the outside though! That is a major accomplishment as they were all cobwebbed & dirty.

I started using the heat gun to remove paint, but set off the smoke alarm. So, that is a day time job when all the windows are open.

If I had gotten my keys on September 14th, I would have had 2 weeks to strip paint and repaint the living room and dining room & sand and poly the floors. Then I could have spent the next 30 days moving. Plans have changed.

I have decided to start moving one room at a time, without the furniture. My boss and several guys from work are going to help move furniture the weekend of the 17th. They said they'd help move boxes too, but I am very adamant about no one helping me move anything other then furniture. I have a LOT of stuff and it's embarrassing when people keep saying that to me over & over again. So, I move it myself.

That is no easy task, because like I said, I have a LOT of stuff.

This weekend I hope to get this accomplished:
  • Purchase a refrigerator, stove and hot water heater
  • Buy curtains and rods for the entire house as a lot of the vintage shades have decided to fall off since I started cleaning windows
  • Move Jewell's bed & toys over to her room
  • Move over all the items in my hall closet
  • Get 1/2 of my office & craft room moved over
  • Clean the 3 car garage so that I can start moving over all my garage junk (animals have pooped on the cement floor at the new house, ewww)

A few things I have discovered:

  • Jewell's room has the best carpet in the entire house. This makes me extremely happy. I pulled up a corner and she has really pretty hardwood underneath in case I want to pull up the carpet some day.
  • My room, however, has the nastiest carpet in the house. Yuck, like 60 years old, I'm sure of it. So, I want to pull up a corner and see if there is any hardwood floor under there as well.
  • The two trees outside are Oak, and one of them is well over 100 years old. I love them.
  • I do not need to paint the kitchen or sun room as the paint is darn near perfect.
  • I do not need to paint my office as it is in perfect condition too.
  • I am prone to getting splinters. Every time I ran a rag over the floor or inside a cabinet or drawer, I get a splinter. And they freaking hurt. Ouch.
  • I'm tired already and haven't even started moving.

  1. and so the list's begin.

its a sure sign you are a official home owner now. LOL

I made sure to sweep, mop, shine and polish every surface in my house before i moved anything in. it makes all the difference moving into a clean smelling house.

Actually, if you have any bald spots on your hardwood floors, like where something rubbed away at the gloss surface. My father-in-law give me his mothers recipe for fixing these kinds of spots.

We had a huge area and I was so sure it wouldn't work- but it did. I cant even tell where it is anymore! Mix one part turpentine to two parts of linseed oil until it has pudding consistency- then take an old rag and using the wax-on method cover the entire area with it. Let it sit for 15-30 min before taking a dry rag and wiping up the excess. and viola!

I kind of like the smell too- kind of antique furniture store kind of smell, but I usually clean my floors normally after I do this. You might have to do it a couple of times once or twice a year. But hey- its better then replacing the floor! (this works on any type of wood really.) Hope it helps! -V

  2. Welcome, my dear, to wonderful world of home ownership. At least people are interested in your house. That says to me that people are glad to see that someone got it, maybe someone who will appreciate it.

Just wait 'til you start doing things. They'll REALLY want to see it then!

Relish the excitement and attention. Oh, and good intentions HAVE to count. There will be plenty of days like that.

  4. NV, it's not so much that I mind showing it off... I love doing that! It's just the whole time people are there, I'm thinking 'hmmm, I need to do this, and this and this, can't forget'... and then they leave, I start to do it and someone else comes. So, it doesn't end up getting done. lol

I don't mind at all showing co-workers and friends, but not fond of showing strangers the inside of my house, ya know? Especially tours. lol
